It’s full of beautiful asian bridal make up looks and hairstyles, so if you’re confused as to the look you want to go for on your big day this can give you a helping hand.  It has three main chapters, the first covers contemporary looks, the second covers classic (more traditional) looks and the third covers hairstyles. 

All the looks throughout the book are based on outfit colours and give suggestions as to the make up that would compliment that colour.  It also lists some of the products used to achieve the look.  However, it doesn’t tell you how to do the look or what make up brushes were used so if you’re thinking of buying the book to learn how to do the make-up, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. 

Other than that though even if you are not getting married as long as  you’re a make up lover it’s great to have as part of your book collection and is great for inspiration if you can’t quite decide how to do your make up for a special occasion.  My favourite look has to be the front cover, it’s contemporary and subtle but still says so much.

The key to this is a good make-up artist who understands your style and the look you want to  achieve on the day. 

For example, if you choose a creamy gold Jhodda Akbar themed outfit, this style is all about the heavily embroidered lengah and the grand statement jewellery.  In this case your make-up artist needs to understand  that your make-up needs to be flawless but yet subtle because the lengah and the jewellery are going to do all the talking. Some good eyeshadows to achieve this look are soft browns and earthy golds like MAC’s Honesty and Woodwinked or Bobbi Brown’s Sable.

If you are going for a more contemporary pastel coloured outfit like baby pink or ivory then you can create more drama with your eye make-up by asking your make-up artist for a smokey eye look but with colours that will compliment your outfit so the look isn’t too over powering. Some good eyeshadows that would suit this look are soft pinks and plums like MAC’s Swish and Plum Dressing or Provoke Cosmetics Aniseed.

If you have decided to go for the cooler tones like minty greens or blues it’s a good idea to intensify the eye make-up.  A good smokey eye will never go unnoticed in amazing shades of iced blues and turquoise like NARS Sugarbaby and Tropic or Provoke Cosmetics beautiful shadow dust pigments in Wave and Peacock.

Wearing new popular bridal colours like hot pink and fuscia purple are a good opportunity to have bright bold eye make-up using vibrant pinks and deep purples like MAC’s Stars n’ Rockets and Parfait Amour or Provoke Cosmetics Boudoir.

Rich emerald green outfits have that regal look and are great with dramatic cat-eyed make-up using dark greens like MAC’s Humid and greensmoke or NARS Night Porter. Emphasising your lashes for this look is a must, the more exagerated the look the better for a fantastic finishing result.  

Finally, even if you do decide to stick to the traditional red asian bridal outfit your make-up doesn’t have be traditional with reds and golds. You can ask your make-up artist to create a sophisticated smokey eye using rich earthy browns and charcoal greys with loads of impact that will definitely stand out from the crowd.

So whatever colour you opt for on your big day as long as your make-up artist understands the overall look you want to achieve and ensures the make-up compliments your outfit rather than clashing with it- you will definitely look a million dollars.

Now adays with so much going on running up to and even after the wedding, brides-to-be aren’t just booking make-up artists for their wedding day- they are booking them for their Dholki Night (Hen Night) and Mendhi (Henna Night) too. 

If you are booking a make-up artist for your wedding and other events it’s always a good idea to do your research first and definitely have a trial with a few make-up artists so that you can pick the one that’s right for you.  For more tips on how to choose a make-up artist take a look at my article on How to choose a Professional Make-up Artist for your Wedding Day.

Here are some pointers to bear in mind once you have chosen your asian bridal make-up artist:

•  It’s a good idea to thoroughly discuss the looks you want to achieve on the different days. 
• Ensure your mendhi make-up is different and preferably simple to the wedding day- you  don’t want to take away the lime light from your big day.
• Allow at least 2 hours to get ready with 30min contingency- time is never on your side at these events!
• Show your make-up artist your outfit and jewellery before the big day, preferably at your trial to ensure your jewellery compliments the way your scarf will be set i.e. if you will be wearing a jhoombar or tikka.
• At the trial discuss your foundation requirements, the key is to have natural flawless looking skin that will last you all day despite the heat from the camera lights.  If you have good clear skin you will need a  more sheer foundation- you don’t want your face to look caked with make-up.  This is where the skills of your artist will come in, he/she will know the right foundation for your skin type be it liquid, cream or mineral based foundation.
• And no matter what happens do not go a shade lighter on your foundation to look fairer- yes some make-up artists do ask if you would like to do this but trust me you will be able to tell, if not in the mirror then in the photographs- be proud of your colour.
• Ensure you discuss whether or not you want to wear false eyelashes and who will be providing them as some make-up artists ask you to buy your own.
• Waterproof mascara is essential- you won’t appreciate mascara soaked tears on your rukhsati.
• Choose the room where you will be getting ready in carefully- ensure there is lots of natural light in the room as this is key to your make-up artist achieving a flawless professional look.
• And finally, remember to prep your canvas- the better the canvas the better the work of art so definitely drink lots of water in the months and weeks running up to your wedding and have weekly facials if possible to keep your skin looking it’s best.

Other than that try to relax and enjoy your time being single and remember to get lots of sleep.
